This was a very, very good conversation guys, thanks. I esp. liked the discussion of "surety of hope" and "perfect brightness of hope" in 2 Nephi 31, since I've been thinking about light as a sign. "Surety," then,seem to point us toward this kind circular dialectic between faith and sign-seeking which allows us a hope that is "with surety." Much to think about....
